PAC All-Conference Release

BETHANY, W.Va. (May 1) – The Waynesburg University men's and women's track & field teams traveled to Bethany on Saturday to take part in the 2011 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championships.

The Yellow Jacket women took third place behind the champions from Washington & Jefferson and second-place Westminster. The Jacket men earned their highest point total in program history, scoring 86 points and finishing fourth. Westminster (129), Washington and Jefferson (119) and Bethany (95) were the only teams to outscore the Jackets.

In total the Jackets had 18 different athletes achieve All-Conference status by finishing in the top three of an individual event. The Jacket men had one individual PAC champion in sophomore Kurt Bonnet, who threw the discus 150'10'' to take the crown. His teammate and fellow sophomore Tony Lamosek took second in the event to earn 2nd team All-Conference honors.

Lamosek was one of four Jackets to earn second team honors- freshman Justin Angotti (800 Meter Run) joined him, as did seniors Jordan Wrask (200 Meter Dash) and Trale Merz (400 Meter Hurdles). The Jackets 4 x 100 meter relay team finished just .19 seconds behind Westminster, also earning second team honors.

Two Jackets finished third individually to take All- PAC Honorable Mention honors; freshman Aaron Anderson ran a 2:01.06 to finish behind Angotti in the 800 Meter and sophomore Doogie Sanner took third with a 166'11'' throw of the javelin.

The Waynesburg men also broke three program records led by Sanner in the triple jump. Sanner broke a five year old school-record with a jump of 11.79. Freshman Justin Angotti broke the school record in the 800 Meter run with a time of 1:59.17 besting the previous top time of 1:59.96, set by Bill Moder in 2009.

The 4X400 relay team of Trale Merz, Justin Angotti, David Cobb and Jordan Wrask broke a year-old school record with a time of 3:24.63, breaking the record by more than two seconds. The Jacket women also broke a school record, as the 4x100 meter relay team of Mikey Macosko, Rhea Huwe, Jaimee Post and Kayla Shacklock posted a time of 50.81, breaking the previous record of 52.52.

For the women, eleven different athletes were honored on an All-PAC team, led by junior Carly Schubert. She not only won the conference championship in the shot put, but also earned honorable mention honors in the discus.

More importantly Schubert's 11.87m throw of the shot put qualified her for the ECAC Championships. She will join a host of her teammates who qualified throughout the season as well as fellow recent qualifiers Trale Merz (400 meter hurdles), the women's 4x100 record setting relay team and the men's 4x100 relay team at the May 19th meet hosted by Moravian College.

Senior Maria Shepas took first in the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase, while teammate Megan Donovan took second. Shepas also earned honorable-mention honors in the 800 Meter run with a time of 2:27.79.

Junior Krystal Baker defended her conference title in the triple jump by leaping 36 feet, eight and a quarter inches, some two feet, eight inches higher than the next best finisher. Baker's teammate Jaimee Post took third place with a jump of 33 feet, eight inches. Baker was, however, unable to repeat as champion in the long jump as she placed third with a jump of 16 feet, eight and three-fourth inches.

The Jacket women totaled 124 team points, just two points less than their total from a year ago.

Both the Waynesburg men and women are scheduled to return to competition on Friday, May 13, when they head to Allegheny College for the Gator Invitational.
