Yellow Jackets outscore Phoenix 8-3 in second half en route to 13-8 victory

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 24) – Behind a strong all-around scoring effort and a dominant second half, the Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season by downing Wilson College 13-8 on a cold Thursday afternoon at John F. Wiley Stadium. The win also snapped an 11-game losing streak that stretched back into the 2010 season.

The Yellow Jackets (1-4) got off to a strong start against the Phoenix (0-3) by burying the first three goals of the game within the first seven minutes of play. Senior Maria Shepas, sophomore Molly Kramer and junior Samantha Swab each scored during the game-opening outburst.

However, Wilson showed its mettle by out-scoring their hosts 5-2 throughout the remainder of the first half and the two teams went into their respective locker rooms tied up at 5-5. Once the second half started, however, the Jackets regained the momentum and never relinquished it.

Waynesburg opened up the final 30 minutes of play by tallying goals from Shepas and Kramer to go up 7-5. After the Phoenix answered to make it 7-6, the home team buried the next five scores, including two each from Kramer and sophomore Tiffany Stansberry to surge ahead 12-6. Wilson posted two of the game's final three goals, but it was too little too late.

Kramer tied a personal single-game best with a team-high and game-high five goals. Stansberry and Shepas added three each to the winning effort, while Swab and senior Miranda Thornton posted a goal each. Stansberry also recorded her first assist of the season on a Kramer goal, while Thornton scooped up a team-high four groundballs.

Junior Erin Burry made her second-straight start in goal and made 10 saves to pick up the victory. As a team, Waynesburg out-shot their opponents by a slim 25-24 margin.

The Jackets return to action in two days, when they host Oberlin on Saturday, March 26, at John F. Wiley Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
