Yellow Jacket wrestlers take down Division II Hilltoppers

Fedorka's win at heavyweight seals 22-16 triumph

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 1) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team ended the 2010-11 dual portion of their schedule with an exciting 22-16 win over Division II West Liberty State on Tuesday night at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

The win was Waynesburg's 12th of the year (12-2-1), which is the team's highest win total during head coach Ron Headlee's three years at the helm. The Hilltoppers, who were ranked as high as 12th in the NCAA Division II ranks, fell to 3-8 on the season.

Waynesburg's talented light weights got their team off to a fast start as sophomore 125-pounder Alex Crown opened the evening with a 16-0 technical fall victory over Preston Foster 3:52 into the bout. Junior 133-pounder Rico Borz followed with a 17-5 major decision win over Pete McAtee to put his team ahead 9-0. Senior 141-pounder Nick Garber, who was competing in his final home dual match, picked up the night's only win by fall when he pinned Matt Cunningham in 1:40.

Leading 15-0, Waynesburg got a big win from freshman Luke Lohr at 149 pounds. Lohr avenged his only loss by fall of the season when he knocked off Brian Leggett by the final score of 8-5. The victory was Lohr's 11th in a row and he currently sports a team-best overall record of 26-3.

Trailing 18-0 and having lost the first four bouts of the night, West Liberty rebounded with five-straight wins, but only one of them came with bonus points. With the Jackets clinging to an 18-16 lead, the heavyweights hit the mat to determine the match outcome. Freshman Brandon Fedorka was up to the challenge as he dominated a much larger opponent in Drake Kowcheck. Even though Kowcheck out-weighed Fedorka by 60 pounds, the Jacket rookie tilted his opponent twice in the third period and rode him for the entire two minutes to turn a 1-0 lead into an 8-0 major decision that clinched the 22-16 win.

With the dual portion of its schedule in the books, Waynesburg turns its attention to Saturday's John Summa Memorial Tournament, which is hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College. The Jackets will be back at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Friday, Feb. 11, when they will try to defend their Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) team title against Washington & Jefferson and Thiel.
