BETHANY, W.Va. (Sept. 1) – The Waynesburg women’s tennis team got the 2010 season off on the right foot with a 6-3 non-conference win over Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Bethany on Wednesday.

The Yellow Jackets (1-0) picked up multiple victories from a trio of competitors, two of which were making their collegiate debuts. Freshman Markie Gustafson led the way with wins at second singles and first doubles, while classmate Logan McDonald duplicated the feat at sixth singles and third doubles. McDonald’s doubles partner, Jenny McAndrews, picked up an impressive 6-0, 6-0 win over Vanessa Manning at fifth singles to pick up her own sweep.

The Jackets got off to a good start by taking two of the three doubles matches against the Bison. Gustafson and junior Rebeka Reyes opened up the scoring for the Jackets with an 8-5 victory over Sarah Wood and Brittani Seeman. After Bethany rebounded with a win at second doubles, McAndrews and McDonald put Waynesburg back in the lead at third doubles.

Moving on to singles competition, the Bison took a hard-fought match at the number-one slot. However, the Jackets sealed up the victory with wins in four of the last five contests. Gustafson defeated Wood 6-1, 6-3, before junior Jessica Kody picked up a 7-5, 6-4 win over Seeman.

After Bethany got back in the win column at fourth singles, McAndrews clinched the win with her victory at fifth singles and McDonald rolling over Bridgette Fauth 6-0, 6-1.

The Jackets will look to go to 2-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 8, when they travel to Washington & Jefferson for their beginning of PAC competition.
