Women's soccer battles hard against Wilmington in season opener

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 1) – After falling behind by three goals late in the game, Waynesburg staged a furious comeback against Wilmington that came just short of forcing overtime in a 4-3 contest on Wednesday evening.

 

Trailing 4-1 with just over 20 minutes to go in the contest, the Yellow Jackets (0-1) got goals from junior Courtney Ebersole and Danielle Danhires just 22 seconds apart from each other to trim the deficit to 4-3. Waynesburg kept the pressure on with 14 minutes to go in the contest, but couldn’t tally a fourth score.

 

Sophomore Heather Davis scored the Jackets’ first goal of the game in the first half that tied the game at 1-1. Junior goalkeeper Katrina Kelly worked all 90 minutes in net for Waynesburg and made 10 saves.

 

The Jackets will look for win number one on Friday, Sept. 3, when they take on Ohio Wesleyan in the Defiance Tournament.

Bruni went 3-0 during Waynesburg’s home quad-match against Penn State Greater Allegheny, Penn State Beaver and Penn State Fayette. The sophomore won two matches by major decision and scored a fall in just 31 seconds over Greater Allegheny’s Soham Salvi.
Jessi Drayer
Women's Basketball
Drayer poured in a team-high 21.0 points per game for the 1-1 Yellow Jackets this past week. She was the team’s leading scorer in both games, going for a game-high 23 points against Westminster, before pouring in a contest-best 19 points in a win over Geneva. The Waterford, Ohio native averaged 21 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game this week.

Head wrestling coach Ron Headlee was a three-time NAIA All-American at Messiah College and the school's first NCAA All-American.

Waynesburg played in the first televised football game. The Yellow Jackets faced Fordham on Sept. 20, 1939 in Randalls Island, N.Y.
