Women's volleyball rolls to 3-0 win over Pitt-Greensburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 1) – The Waynesburg University women’s volleyball team made an impressive debut into the 2010 season Wednesday night. The Yellow Jackets (1-0) easily handled visiting Pitt-Greensburg (0-1) 3-0 at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

Waynesburg took command right from the beginning and never looked back, winning the match with set scores of 25-13, 25-14 and 25-11. 

Freshman outside hitter Katelyn Blaich and junior middle hitter Lauren Wagner looked strong in their Yellow Jackets’ debut. Blaich enjoyed a strong all-around night with eight kills on a team-high 16 attacks, five digs, an ace and an assisted block. Wagner, a first-year transfer put down a team-high nine kills and three total blocks. 

Many of the Yellow Jackets players got in on the scoring attack as six others recorded at least two kills.

Junior outside hitter Carly Schubert led the way in digs with 12, while sophomore setter Carly Smithyman paced the Jackets with 26 assists. Sophomore Presley Cupp chipped in 12 digs, while freshman Natalie Ranallo added 12 assists.

Waynesburg will look to continue their winning ways when they travel to Saint Vincent College this weekend to take part in the Saint Vincent Bearcat Challenge. The Yellow Jackets will play four matches total. Friday night they face Pitt-Greensburg in a rematch at 3 p.m. and move onto Ursuline later in the evening beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday morning the tournament picks up at 9 a.m. with a match against Carlow and finishes out with Houghton at 1 p.m.

Bruni went 3-0 during Waynesburg’s home quad-match against Penn State Greater Allegheny, Penn State Beaver and Penn State Fayette. The sophomore won two matches by major decision and scored a fall in just 31 seconds over Greater Allegheny’s Soham Salvi.
Jessi Drayer
Women's Basketball
Drayer poured in a team-high 21.0 points per game for the 1-1 Yellow Jackets this past week. She was the team’s leading scorer in both games, going for a game-high 23 points against Westminster, before pouring in a contest-best 19 points in a win over Geneva. The Waterford, Ohio native averaged 21 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game this week.
