WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Aug. 24) - The Waynesburg University men’s and women’s tennis programs have plenty to celebrate as both teams were honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for their work in the classroom.

It was the 10th-straight season for the Yellow Jacket women being named an ITA All-Academic team, while the men pick up the award for the second-straight year.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). Waynesburg found itself in especially elite company, as it was one of only 26 schools in Division III that had both its men’s and women’s teams earn spots on the lists.

The Jacket tennis teams, under the direction of veteran head coach Ron Christman, also raked in a slew of individual academic accolades.

The Waynesburg men boasted four individuals who were bestowed the honor of being named an ITA Scholar Athlete. Graduated senior Jeff Canning led the group and was joined by first-year players Jon Anderson, Huang Lei and Jason Logan.

The Yellow Jacket women saw five of their own pick up the individual accolade. Allie Horochak and Jess Mally, both 2009 graduates, were given the award. Current members of the team on the list of ITA award winners are sophomores Stephanie Ball and Katlin Unrue and junior Kelsey Diesel.

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must be a varsity letter winner, have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).

The Waynesburg women get the 2010 season underway on Sept. 1, when they travel to face Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Bethany in a non-conference match. The event is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
