WAYNESBURG, Pa. (May 20) – Junior wrestler Corbin Semple was recently lauded for his work on both the mats and the classroom by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The Waynesburg native was named to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 2 College Division Second Team, which is voted on by members of CoSIDA after a second-straight outstanding season with the Yellow Jackets.
Academically, Semple maintained a 3.80 GPA while majoring in information technology. Athletically, he racked up the second-most wins on the team after compiling a 27-7 overall record that included a 9-1 mark in dual matches. Semple also went 10-0 in matches determined by fall and won his second-straight Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) championship, which went a long way towards Waynesburg winning its first-ever PAC team title in wrestling. From there, he won his second-straight NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championship and qualified for the national championships for a second-straight season.
The Waynesburg standout also earned praise from the National Wrestling Coaches Association after being named to their Scholar All-America Team.
To qualify for the academic all-district honors, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative 3.30 GPA or higher and must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution. Nominees must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's events and must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials.
