SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (May 14) – Thanks in part to a sixth-place finish in the high jump by sophomore Krystal Baker on Friday, the Waynesburg women's track & field team finished in 17th place out of 48 schools at this year's Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships, which were hosted by Springfield (Mass.).
Baker scored 2.5 team points after finishing in a tie for sixth place in the event with a leap of 1.63 meters (5' 4.25”), which, when combined with the 13 points scored by Waynesburg on Thursday, gave them 15.5 for the event. All of yesterday's points were scored in the javelin by junior Elisha Jones and sophomore Marybeth Rocco.
Williams took the women's team championship with 73 points, while MIT took second with 66, and Moravian rounded out the top three with 52 points.
Several members of the Waynesburg men's team also competed at the meet, but they were unable to record any team points. Williams also won the men's team title with 58 points. Bates took second place with 56 points, while Moravian took third with 54.
The next date on Waynesburg's schedule is May 27, when members of the team will compete in the 2010 NCAA Division III National Championships. Jones has already punched her ticket by reaching an automatic qualifying mark in the javelin. Several of her teammates reached provisional qualifying marks, and word has not yet been released as to who will be joining Jones on the trip.
