Championship Results
GROVE CITY, Pa. (May 1) – The Waynesburg University men's and women's track & field teams traveled to Grove City on Saturday to take part in the 2010 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championships.
For the second-straight season, the Yellow Jacket women placed second to Westminster, who picked up its third-straight title. The Jacket men earned their highest finish in program history after taking third behind the champions from Washington & Jefferson and second-place Grove City.
Though the Jacket women were unable to take home the team trophy, they were able to claim one of the major individual awards put out by the conference. Sophomore Krystal Baker was selected as the 2010 PAC Women's Field Athlete of the Year.
The second-year standout won a pair of individual championships at this year's event. She took first in the triple jump (10.96 meters, 35' 11.5”) and added a second win in the jumping events after winning the high jump with a leap of 1.63 meters (5' 4.5). Baker's effort in the high jump also set a new Waynesburg program record.
Junior Maria Shepas also enjoyed a pair of victories at the conference championships. She won the 800-meter race with a school-record time of 2:24.9. She also blew away the field in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after completing the race in 12:14.44, which was more than 26 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
The Jacket women added a pair of wins in the throwing events thanks to junior Elisha Jones and sophomore Carly Schubert. Jones broke the Waynesburg and championship record in the javelin after a throw of 42.49 meters (139' 5”). Schubert beat out the field in the shot put thanks to a heave of 11.61 meters (38' 1.25”).
Though she didn't win the 400 meters, junior Mikey Macosko broke the school record in the event with a time of 1:02.34
The Waynesburg men also broke three program records, led by junior hurdler Trale Merz, who won the 400-meter race with a school-record time of 55.17 seconds. Freshman Travis Schubert made it a men's/women's sweep for the Jackets in the javelin after a toss of 54.12 meters (177' 7”).
The Jacket men added a win in the 4x100 relay race with a time of 43.01 meters. Waynesburg's 4x400 relay quartet placed third with a school-record time 3:26.71, and freshman thrower Kurt Bonnet set a new top program mark in the discus with a second-place heave of 45.27 meters (148' 6”).
The Jacket women totaled 126 team points, while their male counterparts piled up 86 team points, which are both program highs.
Both the Waynesburg men and women are scheduled to return to competition on Friday, May 7, when they head to Slippery Rock University.
