CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. (May 1) – After dropping a pair of heart-breaking losses to Thomas More on Friday, the Waynesburg University baseball team avoided a three-game weekend sweep by downing the Saints 12-9 on Saturday.

With the win, the Yellow Jackets improved to 15-19 on the season and 6-9 in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) play. Thomas More is now 24-13 for the year and 11-4 in PAC competition.

Over the first three innings of competition, the game was an offense-filled slugfest. After the Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, Waynesburg responded with six runs of their own to take a 6-3 lead. The Saints rebounded with two runs in the top of the second, but the Jackets extended their lead to 9-5 in the bottom of the frame and never looked back.

After three innings of play, the Jackets held a 12-8 lead. Following a run by the Saints in the top of the fourth, neither team was able to push another run across home plate.

Eight different Yellow Jackets drove in at least one run a piece in the victory, including designated hitter Patrick Logan, who tied for the game high with three RBI. Logan was also one of three Jackets, who recorded a team-high three hits, and was one of four Waynesburg players who scored two runs each. As a team, Waynesburg out-hit their hosts 20-16.

Junior Tim Knight picked up the win in relief of starting hurler Zac Rhoades. Knight scattered six hits and two walks over four innings pitched and gave up just one earned run.

Waynesburg is scheduled to return to action with the first of three key PAC games against Washington & Jefferson on Friday, May 7.
