WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 20) – The Waynesburg University softball team was swept in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader by Westminster on Tuesday.

After the Titans scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull out a 4-2 win in game one, the visitors needed just five innings to down the Yellow Jackets 9-1 in the late contest. With the losses, Waynesburg falls to 11-15 on the season and 4-6 in the PAC standings. Westminster improved to 17-11 on the season and 4-2 in conference action.

After Westminster jumped out to 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game one, the contest was dominated by pitching and defense until the bottom of the fifth when the Jackets were finally able to get on the board. After designated player Tonya Tanner led off with a walk, she made it to third base on an error and a sacrifice bunt. Shortstop Kristen Lautenschlager tied the game at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly that plated Tanner.

Waynesburg took their first and only lead of the day in the bottom of the sixth after pitcher Amanda Baughman led off with a double and Jaime Gillum came in to run for her. Two batters later, second baseman Bre Kokladas made it 2-1 Jackets with an RBI single that brought Gillum home.

After a single by first baseman Anastasia Hartnett put two runners on with only one out, the home team looked poised to take control of the contest. However, Westminster was able to get out of the jam and go to work on the comeback.

The Titans turned two singles, a double and a walk into three runs to go up 4-2. Waynesburg put two runners on the bases with walks, but couldn’t bring either of them home.

In game two, Westminster jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first and never looked back on their way to the win. The Jackets’ lone highlight of the contest was centerfielder Amber Pivik blasting her first homerun of the season to cut the lead to 5-1 in the top of the second.

However, the Titans put the game away with a run in the third and three in the fourth.

Four different Waynesburg hitters picked up a pair of hits on the day, including Pivik and Baughman. Lautenschlager and Kokladas also accomplished the feat. Baughman took the loss in the circle for both contests. For the day, she worked all 11 contested innings and gave up seven earned runs on 11 hits. She picked up two strikeouts on the afternoon.

The Jackets will need to pick themselves up quickly as they are scheduled to return to action on Thursday, April 22, when they travel to Penn State Fayette, the Eberly Campus. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
