KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 7) – The Waynesburg University softball team opened up their season Sunday with a pair of games against Trine University and Defiance College.

The Yellow Jackets were victorious in their season-opener against Trine by a final score of 4-2. Junior Amanda Baughman, the game’s winning pitcher, was strong in the circle and at the plate during the win.

With the game scoreless in the bottom of the third, junior outfielder Nicole Forte led off the inning with a single up the right side. After back to back walks loaded the bases, Baughman drilled a pitch out to the left field fence driving in all three runs and leaving herself in scoring position with a double.

Following a groundout that moved Baughman to third, junior catcher Tonya Tanner ripped a single up the middle to knock in the fourth run of the inning and the game for the Yellow Jackets.

In the later innings of the game, Trine had put two runs up on the scoreboard and had a runner on third ready to strike again. On a rocket line drive, freshman shortstop Rachael Moon made a diving stop to keep the Yellow Jackets ahead by two runs and ultimately seal the victory.

Game two of Sunday’s doubleheader did not go as well for Waynesburg as the first as the Yellow Jackets were downed by Defiance 11-0. Junior pitcher Kristen Lautenschlager suffered the loss.

Waynesburg will face Marian University at 9 a.m. and Eastern Menonite University at 1 p.m. Monday in continuation of their trip to the Rebel Games.
