WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (March 8) – The Waynesburg University baseball team picked up its first win of the season during a double-header against Anna Maria (Mass.) on Monday. The games were played as part of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

 

The Yellow Jackets downed the AMCATS by the final score of 10-6 in game two of the twin bill. Waynesburg was able to erase a 5-1 fourth-inning deficit over the final three innings of the contest to pick up the victory.

 

After falling behind early, Waynesburg exploded for four runs in the fifth to tie the game at 5-5. They added three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to build up a 10-5 advantage. The AMCATS picked up a run in the seventh and loaded the bases with one out on the board. However, Jacket shortstop Anthony DeFilippo snared a line drive and completed an unassisted double play seal the win.

 

Senior second baseman Wes White Jr led a balanced offensive attack by going two-for-three with a triple and a single. He reached base a total of five times, stole a base, scored three runs and drove in another. Sophomore Corey Goeggelman added a two-for-two performance with a pair of sacrifice bunts, a stolen base, two runs scored and a pair of RBI.

 

Rob Cool Jr totaled three hits in four at-bats with a walk and a double. He added an RBI and a run scored.

 

Sophomore lefty Chris Dittmar got the start and picked up the win after working five innings on the hill. He gave up five runs, all earned, on six hits and three walks. He struck out one AMC hitter on the day. Junior Tim Knight recorded the save after forcing the game-ending double play.

 

Waynesburg’s Monday started with a 6-3 loss to Anna Maria. Senior Ryan Schell took the loss on the mound after tossing two innings and giving up three runs on three hits and five walks. The righty struck out a pair of hitters on the day. Cool and Goeggelman reached base three times each on a single, a walk and an error.

 

Junior Jesse Gonzalez put together some impressive numbers out of the bullpen after striking out five batters over 2.1 combined innings between the two contests.

 

The Jackets return to the field on Tuesday, when they face Husson (Maine) for a doubleheader that gets underway at 3 p.m.

Bruni went 3-0 during Waynesburg’s home quad-match against Penn State Greater Allegheny, Penn State Beaver and Penn State Fayette. The sophomore won two matches by major decision and scored a fall in just 31 seconds over Greater Allegheny’s Soham Salvi.
Jessi Drayer
Women's Basketball
Drayer poured in a team-high 21.0 points per game for the 1-1 Yellow Jackets this past week. She was the team’s leading scorer in both games, going for a game-high 23 points against Westminster, before pouring in a contest-best 19 points in a win over Geneva. The Waterford, Ohio native averaged 21 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game this week.
