CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (March 5) – Junior 133-pounder Nick Garber made history on Friday night at the Division III National Championships as he became Waynesburg's first All-American since 2001, and he did it in dominating fashion.
The unseeded Garber squared off with fourth-seeded Sean White of Wartburg in an elimination match at the U.S. Cellular Center and controlled his opponent from the start with a takedown and three back points off a move that nearly resulted in Garber pinning White. After White reversed to make it 5-2, Garber hit his own reversal and put his opponent to his back again. At the end of the first period, Garber held a 10-2 lead.
The dominance continued in the second period as Garber took the top position and put White to his back again for a 13-2 lead. After White reversed out again, the score at the end of the second period was 13-4 in Garber's favor.
In the third period, White was able to ride Garber through the final two minutes to get the riding point and pick up a point for stalling on Garber, but it wasn't enough as the Waynesburg native picked up the 13-6 win.
On Saturday morning, Garber will face William Livingston of Centenary. The winner of that match will continue on towards the third-place match, while the loser will wrestle for seventh place.
