0305 Garber vs. Marcello

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (March 5) – Junior 133-pounder Nick Garber stayed alive at the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Championships on Friday evening by beating Paul Marcello of Johns Hopkins by 8-7 decision in an elimination match in the consolation rounds.

Garber easily picked up the first takedown and went up 2-0. After being reversed by Marcello, Garber escaped and added another takedown to take a 5-2 lead after two periods. The second period was another back-and-forth two minutes, but after it ended, Garber still led 8-6.

In the third period, Garber couldn’t get out from underneath of Marcello and gave up a riding time point, but still managed to hold on for an 8-7 win. The Waynesburg native will need all the rest he can get for his next match, as he will face fourth-seeded Sean White of Wartburg. The winner of that match will be guaranteed a top-eight finish and All-American status.
