WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 9) – Sophomore wrestler Garrett Johnston had arguably his best week as a collegiate wrestler over the past seven days. For his efforts, Johnston earned the final Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Wrestler of the Week Award of the 2009-10 season.
The Sycamore native went a perfect 3-0 on the week and got the unbeaten stretch going by upsetting Kevin McElhaney of Gannon on Wednesday, Feb. 3. McElhaney, whom Johnston beat 8-1, was a 2009 Division II All-American and is currently ranked eighth in Division II. The second-year grappler finished his week this past Saturday by pinning a pair of opponents at the John Summa Memorial Tournament and winning the 149-pound individual championship.
With his three latest victories, Johnston has now won seven-straight bouts, four of which have come by fall. After overcoming some early season leg injuries, the sophomore is now 13-8 overall and 6-5 in dual matches. He is the fifth different Jacket to win the award this season. For the season, Waynesburg won seven of a possible 11 PAC Wrestler of the Week Awards. For a complete look at this week’s PAC Wrestling release, click here.
