Jacket women stifle Thiel in PAC victory

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 8) – Waynesburg’s stifling defense proved to be too much for visiting Thiel as the Yellow Jackets beat the Tomcats 52-42 on Wednesday night at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

 

The win, Waynesburg’s second in a row, improved their overall record to 8-13 and 5-7 in PAC play. The Tomcats fell to 6-14 on the season and 2-8 in conference action.

 

The Jackets opened up a 4-0 lead on lay-ups by senior guard Kristen Lucci and junior forward Elisha Jones and never trailed for the entire span of 40 minutes. The home team led by as many as nine points (24-15) before the first half came to a close with the Jackets up 24-17.

 

Waynesburg extended their lead to as many as 11 points on several occasions, including a 42-31 advantage that came with eight minutes to go in the game. Though Thiel was able to go on a 10-2 run over the next three minutes that trimmed the lead to just three (44-41), the Jackets closed the contest on an 8-1 spurt that sealed the 10-point victory.

 

Sophomore point guard Hannah Hunter poured in a game-high 13 points to lead Waynesburg to the win. Jones added 10 points on the night. The Jackets were also able to hold Thiel to just 29 percent shooting (15-of-52) on the night and the Tomcats committed 24 turnovers, 13 of which came on Waynesburg steals.

 

Thiel was led by freshman forward Kelly Barzak’s 12 points. Thiel sophomore forward Ashley Davis pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.  

 

Waynesburg returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 10, when they travel to Kentucky to face Thomas More.

Bruni went 3-0 during Waynesburg’s home quad-match against Penn State Greater Allegheny, Penn State Beaver and Penn State Fayette. The sophomore won two matches by major decision and scored a fall in just 31 seconds over Greater Allegheny’s Soham Salvi.
Jessi Drayer
Women's Basketball
Drayer poured in a team-high 21.0 points per game for the 1-1 Yellow Jackets this past week. She was the team’s leading scorer in both games, going for a game-high 23 points against Westminster, before pouring in a contest-best 19 points in a win over Geneva. The Waterford, Ohio native averaged 21 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game this week.
