WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 8) – The Waynesburg men’s basketball team fell to Thiel by the final of 78-54 on Wednesday night at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

 

The Tomcats (12-9, 5-4) opened up a 37-25 lead at halftime, before out-scoring Waynesburg by 12 points (41-29) in the second half to clinch the win. The Yellow Jackets fell to 2-17 on the year and 0-10 in PAC play.

 

Waynesburg got a team-high 10 points from freshman point guard Ben Altmeyer, who was the team’s leading scorer. Junior guard Erik Noone and senior guard Ryan Courneen added eight points each in the loss. Noone added a game-high three steals on the night.

 

The Tomcats, which out-shot Waynesburg 44 percent (28-of-64) to 32 percent (19-of-60), saw four of their starting five reach double-digit scoring on the night. Senior guard Sean Devinney led the quartet with a game-high 17 points. Thiel also held a 47-35 advantage in rebounding.

 

The Jackets return to the court on Wednesday, Feb. 10, when they travel to Thomas More to face the Saints in a PAC showdown.

Bruni went 3-0 during Waynesburg’s home quad-match against Penn State Greater Allegheny, Penn State Beaver and Penn State Fayette. The sophomore won two matches by major decision and scored a fall in just 31 seconds over Greater Allegheny’s Soham Salvi.
Jessi Drayer
Women's Basketball
Drayer poured in a team-high 21.0 points per game for the 1-1 Yellow Jackets this past week. She was the team’s leading scorer in both games, going for a game-high 23 points against Westminster, before pouring in a contest-best 19 points in a win over Geneva. The Waterford, Ohio native averaged 21 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game this week.
