ERIE, Pa. (Feb. 3) – With several of its usual starters out for various reasons, the Waynesburg wrestling team was overwhelmed by a powerful Gannon squad on Wednesday. The Golden Knights won nine of 10 bouts and picked up a 39-3 victory.

Gannon, the fifth-ranked team in Division II improved to 5-3 in duals this season, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 6-9.

The Jackets’ lone win on the night came courtesy of sophomore Garrett Johnston, who looked strong in an 8-1 victory over Kevin McElhaney at 149 pounds. Several of Johnston’s teammates wrestled gritty, close matches, including sophomore Chris Pihiou who, in just his second bout of the year, dropped a hard-fought 4-1 contest to seventh-ranked Zack McKendree.

Waynesburg will participate in their final tune-up before the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Championships this Saturday, when they travel to Baldwin-Wallace College to participate in the John Summa Invitational on Saturday. The PAC Championships will be held on Friday, Feb. 12, at Thiel College.
