NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (Feb. 3) – After falling behind 44-23 at halftime, the Waynesburg men’s basketball team battled back in the second period before falling short in an 87-70 Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) contest on Wednesday night at the Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

With the loss, Waynesburg dropped to 2-16 overall and 0-9 in PAC play. The Win moved Westminster to 7-14 on the season and 2-7 in conference action.

The Titans’ 21-point advantage following the first 20 minutes of play came from a combination of poor shooting from the Yellow Jackets (six-of-27 from the floor) and solid work from the field by the home team (15-of-34). However, the Jackets were the better team from the free throw line, connecting on 11-of-12 from the stripe. Westminster hit on eight of 14 attempts. Each team committed 12 personal fouls in the half.

Waynesburg showed some bite in the second half as they were able to trim the lead down to as few as 11 points (79-68) with around a minute and a half to go in the contest. The Yellow Jackets were led by junior forward Jeff Young, who posted a double-double on a team-high 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Freshman point guard Ben Altmeyer added 12 points, while sophomore guard Larry Alexander chipped in 11.

Westminster was paced by senior forward Ryne Murray, who poured in a game-high 22 points and just missed out on a double-double with nine rebounds. The Titans held a 46-36 advantage in rebounding and dished out 21 assists to Waynesburg’s eight.

The Jackets will try to get on the winning track this Saturday, when they host Thiel in a PAC showdown.
