WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 2) – A total of four Yellow Jackets found themselves amongst the nation’s top Division III wrestlers when the latest d3wrestle.com individual rankings were released on Tuesday.

 

Leading the group was junior 184-pounder Corbin Semple, who held steady at the fifth spot. Semple is now 20-4 on the season and has won 14 of his last 15 bouts. Junior Nick Garber was also listed as a top-10 grappler, and held tight to the ninth spot at 133 pounds. Garber, who has actually done the vast majority of his competing at 141, leads the team with a 21-3 record, with 11 victories coming by fall. He’s been victorious in 13 of his last 14 contests.

 

The Jackets added two more of their own to the national rankings in freshman 125-pounder Alex Crown and sophomore 165-pounder Alex Evanoff.

 

Crown was listed as an honorable mention selection at 125 after putting together a resume that includes a 19-7 overall record, an 11-2 dual mark and a team-high seven victories coming by way of technical fall. The Carlisle native has won five of his last six bouts.

 

Evanoff, who was also listed under the heading of “honorable mention” currently sports a 13-7 overall record with his last four victories coming by way of major decision. He has also won nine of his last 10 matches against Division III opponents. His five wins by major decision are the most on the squad.

The Jackets return to the mats on Wednesday, Feb. 3, when they travel to Erie, Pa. to face Division II powerhouse Gannon in a dual match. Waynesburg is also preparing for the upcoming Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Championships, which will be hosted by Thiel College on Feb. 12.

Jessi Drayer
Women's Basketball
Drayer poured in a team-high 21.0 points per game for the 1-1 Yellow Jackets this past week. She was the team’s leading scorer in both games, going for a game-high 23 points against Westminster, before pouring in a contest-best 19 points in a win over Geneva. The Waterford, Ohio native averaged 21 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game this week.
Dan Bruni
Wrestling
Bruni went 3-0 during Waynesburg’s home quad-match against Penn State Greater Allegheny, Penn State Beaver and Penn State Fayette. The sophomore won two matches by major decision and scored a fall in just 31 seconds over Greater Allegheny’s Soham Salvi.

The Waynesburg football team is 2-0 all-time against Penn State. The last time they met was in 1932, when the Jackets won 7-6.
