WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 1) – Waynesburg University is pleased to announce the hiring of Sean McCarthy as the new head men’s and women’s soccer coach. He replaces former men’s coach Carl DeiCas and former women’s coach Jim Rue.

“We did a wide search for a new soccer coach,” said Rudy Marisa, Waynesburg Director of Athletics. “We believe we have chosen the right person to make progress with our men’s and women’s teams.”

McCarthy comes to Waynesburg from SUNY (State University of New York) Old Westbury, where he was working in his second stint as the first assistant coach with the Panther men. His first stay at Old Westbury ran from 2005 to 2008.

In 2007, McCarthy helped lead the Panthers to the Skyline Conference title and the school’s first-ever berth into the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championships. He also coached two players in the top 35 of Division III in scoring and a player in the top-50 for assists. That same season, the Old Westbury staff was named Skyline Conference Coaches of the Year and members of the Panthers won freshman and player of the year awards, respectively.

In 2008, McCarthy accepted an assistant coaching position with Division I Xavier University. After working a year with the Musketeers, he returned to Old Westbury. McCarthy also spent a year as a student assistant at Elizabethtown College in 2003.

Along with his collegiate coaching background, McCarthy has also worked with multiple soccer academies, camps, youth teams and professional teams. One of those stops came in Long Island, where he was an assistant coach for the Long Island Rough Riders of the Premier Development League (PDL) of the United Soccer Leagues (USL), which is designed to showcase the top collegiate and professional players in the nation. The PDL is the largest professional/amateur league in the United States.

Along with his extensive coaching experience, McCarthy is also a seasoned player. During his collegiate playing days, which ran from 1999 to 2002, the newest addition to the Waynesburg coaching staff saw time with St. Joseph’s, Elizabethtown College and SUNY Old Westbury. Since 2002, McCarthy played for Florist Park SC.

McCarthy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from SUNY Old Westbury in American Studies in 2004. He is also certified by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and is working on his certification with the United States Soccer Federation (USSF).

As the newest addition to the Waynesburg athletic family, McCarthy can’t wait to get started with his new teams and lead them to new levels of success.

“I’m really excited at the opportunity that the administration at Waynesburg has given me,” McCarthy said. “I look forward to taking the Waynesburg soccer programs to new levels.”
