WASHINGTON, Pa. (Jan. 17) – The Waynesburg University women’s basketball team dropped a road Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) game at nationally-ranked Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday.

After trailing by just three points with 3:12 to go in the first half, W&J was able to open up a 40-31 halftime advantage and go on to a 73-52 win over the Yellow Jackets. Waynesburg is now 8-16 on the season and 5-9 in the PAC. The Presidents improved to 21-3 overall and 11-2 in conference action.

The Presidents showed tremendous efficiency from the floor as they made 58 percent of their attempts (23-of-40) on the night. W&J, which is the top free throw-shooting team in Division III, also out-performed their opponents from the free throw line, connecting on 21-of-28 tries from the charity stripe (75 percent). The visitors made just seven-of-17 attempts (41 percent).

However, the Jackets greatly out-performed their opponents on the glass, out-rebounding the Presidents 41 to 26. Waynesburg also took 20 more shots from the floor (60 to 40), but only made 35 percent, or 21, of those tries.

The visitors were paced by junior forward Elisha Jones, who tallied a team-high 15 points in the loss. Reserve forward Paige Pearce added 10 points off the bench. Freshman forward Brittany Spencer pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. Sophomore point guard Hannah Hunter dished out a game-high five assists.

W&J was led by guards Stephanie Smith and Kennan Killeen, who scored a game-high 16 points each.

The Jacket women wrap up the regular season on Saturday, when they host Geneva for senior night.
