Men's hoops team loses tight contest at Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. (Feb. 13) – The Waynesburg University men’s basketball team made a furious comeback attempt late in the fourth quarter against Saint Vincent on Saturday night that erased a nine-point lead and put the Jackets in position to steal away a win.

 

Unfortunately, the Bearcats broke the hearts of their opponents with a last-second jumper that gave the home team a 51-49 win. The victory snapped a nine-game losing streak for Saint Vincent, which is now 6-16 on the year. The loss dropped Waynesburg to 2-19 for the season.

 

Saint Vincent opened up a 20-15 lead at halftime and were able to build their advantage to nine points (49-40) with 1:43 to go in the game. A pair of three-pointers from sophomore Erik Noone and a long ball from freshman Ben Altmeyer tied the game at 49-49 with 16 seconds showing on the clock. Unfortunately, the Bearcats’ Armani Fountain was able to knock a jumper down with four seconds left in regulation to seal up the win.

 

Noone had a solid night on the court with a team-high 15 points and eight rebounds. Altmeyer added 12 points on the night, while junior forward Jeff Young pulled down a team-best nine rebounds.

 

Saint Vincent got a game-high 16 points from guard BJ McGill.

 

Waynesburg will try to rebound quickly from their heart-breaking loss as they return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 17, when they travel to Washington & Jefferson.

Bruni went 3-0 during Waynesburg’s home quad-match against Penn State Greater Allegheny, Penn State Beaver and Penn State Fayette. The sophomore won two matches by major decision and scored a fall in just 31 seconds over Greater Allegheny’s Soham Salvi.
Jessi Drayer
Women's Basketball
Drayer poured in a team-high 21.0 points per game for the 1-1 Yellow Jackets this past week. She was the team’s leading scorer in both games, going for a game-high 23 points against Westminster, before pouring in a contest-best 19 points in a win over Geneva. The Waterford, Ohio native averaged 21 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game this week.
