GAMBIER, Ohio (Feb. 12) – Members of the Waynesburg University men's and women's track and field team got the indoor portion of the 2010 schedule underway this past Friday by competing in the Kenyon College Invitational. The Yellow Jackets got strong performances from both the men's and women' squads.
Junior Jeremy Faidley was the top performer on the day, as he bested 32 other competitors in the men's shot put. Faidley won the event with a toss of 13.76 meters (45.14 feet). Waynesburg boasted three entrants that finished in the top 10 in the event, thanks to sophomore Travis Schubert (12.77m, 41.9 feet) and freshman Kody Smith (12.3m, 40.35 feet).
Junior hurdler Trale Merz set a new school record in the 55-meter hurdles with a qualifying time of 8.41 seconds. He went on to place third. The Jacket men also saw new program marks set in the 55-meter and 200-meter sprints thanks to junior Jordan Wrask. Wrask set the mark in the 55 meters with a time of 6.83 in his qualifying run, and placed 10th in the 200 after crossing the finish line in 24.37 seconds.
The Waynesburg women enjoyed their share of strong performers in both the track and field events. Maria Shepas picked up a pair of top-three performances in the 800-meter and mile runs. She placed second in the mile with a time of 5:40.85 and added her third-place finish in the 800 after crossing the finish line in 2:34.02.
Junior Michaeline “Mikey” Macosko put together a school record-setting performance in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.23 seconds in her qualifying run. She went on to place second in the event with a time of 9.37 seconds.
The top performance in the field events for the Waynesburg women came courtesy of sophomore thrower Carly Schubert. Her throw of 11.56m (37.93 feet) not only set a new school indoor record, but was good enough to place second in the event.
There was no team scoring at the meet.
Waynesburg returns to competition on Saturday, Feb. 20, when they return to Gambier for the Kenyon Classic.
