WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 9) – The Waynesburg University women’s basketball team showed no fear of 14th-ranked Thomas More when the two squads clashed on Saturday at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

Four minutes into the second half, the Yellow Jackets trailed by just four points (38-34) and a stunning upset looked like a possibility. However, the Saints regrouped and showed why they are one of the best teams in the country by rolling to an 82-52 win. The loss dropped the Jackets to 5-8 overall and 2-4 in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) play. The Saints are now 11-2 on the season and 4-1 in PAC play.

After five-and-a-half minutes of play, the Jackets were able to open up an 8-7 lead, thanks to a jump shot by junior forward Elisha Jones. Though that was the last time Waynesburg had the lead, the home team stayed with their highly touted opponents throughout the first 20 minutes of play. When the first half drew to a close, the Jackets trailed by just eight points (31-23).

As previously mentioned, Waynesburg continued to stick with the Saints through the first minutes of the second period. Unfortunately, the Jackets finally ran out of steam and Thomas More took over with several long scoring runs that put the game away.

Waynesburg got a strong effort on the boards from freshman forward Brittany Spencer, who pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. Jones led the team in scoring with 12 points, while senior guard Johnna Deco added 11, and sophomore Morgan Hoone chipped in nine.

The Saints were paced by sophomore guard Chelsea Tolliver, who poured in a game-high 25 points.

The Jackets will try to get back on the winning track on Jan. 13, when they host Saint Vincent for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
