WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 23) – It was a night of fun and festivities leading up to the Waynesburg University wrestling match with Penn State-Dubois on Saturday at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. Not only was it senior night for four Yellow Jacket grapplers, but the Murdock men, a group of Waynesburg alumni who support the program, were also in attendance for an annual get-together.

However, once all of the festivities were over, the Jackets were nothing but business as they won nine matches en route to a 38-6 blowout victory. The win was Waynesburg’s second dominant performance in as many days. Waynesburg’s dual record improved 6-7 on the season, while the Nittany Lions fell to 4-6.

Freshman Alex Crown opened up the scoring with a 4-0 decision, and senior Josh Mollica followed with an 8-2 win to put the home team up 6-0.

The wins kept coming for the Jackets as junior 141-pounder Nick Garber picked up an 8-2 win and Jesse Byerly earned the team’s first bonus-point victory with a 13-3 major decision at 149 pounds.

Sophomore Garrett Johnston continued his recent run of success with a 4-0 decision, while classmate Alex Evanoff added a 14-6 major decision triumph at 165 to stretch the Jackets’ lead to 20-0. Waynesburg’s most dominant performance came at 174 pounds, where sophomore Jared Roberts picked up a win by fall in just 53 seconds.

After junior Corbin Semple picked up a forfeit at 184 to extend Waynesburg’s advantage to 32-0. Following a win by fall at 197 pounds for Penn State-Dubois, the Jackets completed the blowout victory when senior heavyweight Melvin Warrick was awarded a forfeit.

Following dual matches in back-to-back nights, Waynesburg is off until Jan. 30, when they travel to West Liberty State University, the 13th-ranked team in Division II.
