WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 16) – Despite boasting the game’s leading scorer and rebounder, the Waynesburg University women’s basketball team couldn’t find a way past the nationally-ranked Presidents of Washington & Jefferson on Saturday night.

The Presidents (13-2, 5-1) got out to a 29-21 halftime lead and built on it throughout the second half on their way to a 65-49 Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) victory at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. The loss dropped the Yellow Jackets 5-10 overall on the season and 2-5 in PAC play.

Some shooting struggles from the field hindered Waynesburg’s chances at an upset of the 25th-ranked Presidents, as the home team managed to connect on just 28 percent of their shots (16-of-57). W&J, on the other hand, went 22-of-53 from the floor.

The Yellow Jackets’ Elisha Jones led all scorers with 18 points on six-of-14 shooting. Senior guard Johnna Deco led all players in rebounding with 11 boards. The Jackets also got a solid all-around effort from freshman forward Brittany Spencer, who rolled up nine points and eight rebounds.

The Presidents were led by senior forward Maggie Gibson, who recorded a double-double on 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Waynesburg will try to get back on the winning track when they head to Beaver Falls, Pa. to Geneva on Jan. 20. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
