WASHINGTON, Pa. (May 3) – The Waynesburg University baseball team kept their playoff hopes alive with a 5-2 victory over Washington & Jefferson on Sunday.

The game was held at Washington’s Ross Memorial Park, but was considered a home game for the Jackets.

With the victory, the Yellow Jackets improved their Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) improved to 9-9 on the season, while the Presidents, who are the top team in the conference, dropped to 13-5 in conference action. Waynesburg is now 18-21 overall and W&J is 28-11 on the season.

The Presidents took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Jackets tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by centerfielder Rob Cool Jr.

After W&J retook a one-run lead (2-1) in the top of the fourth, Waynesburg grabbed their first lead of the contest in the bottom of the inning.

With the bases loaded, second baseman Wes White Jr drew a walk to plate designated hitter Kenny Grant to tie the contest. Third baseman Corey Goeggelman (pictured above) followed with a run-scoring single to give the Jackets a 3-2 advantage.

In the sixth, leftfielder Andrew Spargur tagged an RBI single that scored Grant, who drew a walk to lead off the inning. Up 4-2, Waynesburg added one more insurance run when Goeggelman crossed home plate on a wild pitch in the seventh.

Waynesburg got an outstanding pitching effort from sophomore Tim Knight, who picked up the victory in complete-game fashion. He gave up just six hits and didn’t walk a batter, while striking out five President hitters.

Goeggelman led the Waynesburg offense by going three-for-four at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Grant scored two runs on the day and four different Jackets recorded an RBI each.

After taking care of business in their final regular season game of 2009, The Yellow Jackets must wait and see what happens with the game between Grove City and Bethany on Monday.

If the Wolverines win, they get the fourth-and-final postseason spot. If the Bison can pull the upset, Waynesburg is into the tournament.
