WASHINGTON, Pa. (May 2) – The potent Waynesburg bats were kept under control by the best pitching staff in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) as Washington & Jefferson swept the visiting Yellow Jackets in a Saturday baseball doubleheader.

The Presidents took game one by the final of 11-3 and followed that with a 5-2 triumph in game two. The five combined runs scored by the Jackets was their lowest offensive output in a seven-inning doubleheader since scoring five runs in two games against Trine (Ind.) back on March 10.

After falling behind 2-0 in the bottom of the first, Waynesburg (17-21,8-9) tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the third thanks to an RBI triple by centerfielder Rob Cool Jr and an RBI single by shortstop Anthony Defilippo.

Unfortunately, W&J (28-10, 13-4) out-scored the Yellow Jackets 9-1 over the final three-plus innings to take the victory.

Cool, Defilippo and second baseman Wes White Jr recorded two hits and an RBI each in the loss. White added two stolen bases.

Sophomore Jesse Gonzalez started on the mound and took the loss after giving up eight earned runs on 10 hits and two walks in 5.1 innings.

Game two started out well for the visiting Jackets as they took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly struck by Cool that scored White.

However, W&J was up to the task for a second-straight game as they tallied the next five runs to take a 5-1 advantage after three innings of action . Waynesburg scored their final run of the day in the top of the sixth.

Waynesburg was out-hit 10-3 in the loss and managed their second-fewest base knocks of the season. Junior Patrick Logan took the loss on the hill after throwing all six innings and giving up five earned runs on 10 hits and a walk.

The Jackets and Presidents are tentatively scheduled to close up their three-game series tomorrow in Waynesburg. It would be the final regular season contest for the Jackets.
