GREENVILLE, Pa. (Apr. 8) – The Waynesburg softball team managed to split a Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader at Thiel on Thursday.

The Yellow Jackets dropped game one by the final of 1-0, but rebounded to win an 8-6 slugfest in game two. The win moved Waynesburg to 2-4 in the PAC and 10-10 overall, while the Tomcats are now 1-3 in the conference and 9-15 on the season.

The opener’s only offense came on an RBI groundout by Thiel’s Laura Wise.

The two teams combined for just five total hits on the day, with both of Waynesburg’s base knocks coming off the bat of third baseman Amanda Baughman.

Senior pitcher Autumn Minor suffered the loss for Waynesburg, despite giving up just three hits and a walk, while striking out two.

Game two was a completely different contest from the low-scoring opener as the two teams combined for 22 hits and seven errors.

Thiel jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning and built a 5-2 advantage after the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the inning, Waynesburg’s bats woke up in a big way and were given some assistance by the Thiel defense.

The Jackets combined five hits, with two walks and two errors to bring five runs across the plate in the big half-inning. Second baseman Stephanie Leisie got the game-breaking hit of the inning as she drilled a three-run triple off of Tomcat hurler Elise Moore to put her team up 7-5

Both teams added a run in the sixth to bring about the final score of 8-6.

While the Waynesburg offense had more than its share of struggles in game one, the bats looked great in game two. Minor moved to the designated player position in game two and went three-for-four at the plate with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored.

Shortstop Samantha Volponi added two hits on the day. Baughman got the start at pitcher and picked up the win after giving up five earned runs on 12 hits and a walk. She also struck out six Thiel hitters over seven innings of work.

Waynesburg returns to action Thursday when they host Bethany in a doubleheader that is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
