WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 6) – The Waynesburg University men’s golf team finally got their season underway at the Waynesburg Invitational, which was held at The Greene County Country Club.

The event was worth the wait for the Yellow Jackets, as their A Team shot a five-man score of 333 to edge the California University of Pa. Professional Golf Management (PGM) Team and two other teams to take top honors at the event.

The win was Waynesburg’s first at an invitational since the 2006 Waynesburg Invitational.

The victory made new men’s golf coach Luis Almeida’s debut a successful one as the Yellow Jackets beat the Vulcans by one stroke (334), and had no trouble in downing fellow Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) member Bethany (373). Waynesburg also entered a B Team, which shot a 397 to place fourth.

While individual medalist honors went to the Cal’s Zack Turek, who carded a 79 on the day, the Jackets’ A Team was the only one to feature all five players with scores in the 80s.

Though they had to battle rain, wind, snow and temperatures in the 30s, Waynesburg got a balanced effort from their top group. Senior James White, senior Tommy Rohanna and junior Josh Mollica all carded scores of 83 to lead the way.

Senior Sean Call carded an 84 and recent team addition Kyle Kyper rounded out the A Team’s day with an 89.

Bethany was led by freshman Ryan Rokisky, who put up a team-best 80.

The Jacket men are back in action on April 16, when they travel to the Latrobe Country Club to take part in the Saint Vincent Invitational.
