Men's tennis picks up gritty victory at Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. (Apr. 24) – The Waynesburg men’s tennis team earned a quality win on Friday when they traveled to
Frostburg State University and earned a 5-4 victory over the Bobcats.

 

The Jackets’ victory bumped their overall record to 6-4 on the season, while Frostburg ended their season with a 7-7 mark in 2009.

 

The Yellow Jackets got off to a great start as they swept the three doubles matches against the Cats, with two of the victories coming in tie-breaker fashion.

 

Senior Kevin Houseknecht and junior Jeff Canning claimed victory at first doubles by the final score of 9-8 (7-5). The visitors won their second-straight match by tie-breaker when sophomore Emile Khoury and freshman Peter Mally won 9-8 (7-5).

 

The Jackets completed the sweep thanks to an 8-6 win at number-three doubles by junior Adam Woodruff and senior Dustin Cozad.

 

Up 3-0 going into singles competition, Waynesburg wrapped up the victory thanks to wins by Canning and Khoury in the solo ranks.

 

Canning got his second victory of the day at second singles with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph. Khoury finished his day with a 6-2, 6-4 win at fourth singles.

 

Waynesburg ends their season tomorrow, when they return to the state of Pennsylvania to face Lancaster Bible College. The match is scheduled to start at 12 p.m.

Softball
Baughman drilled a three-run double in the third inning of Waynesburg's 4-2 win over Trine to break up a scoreless tie and give the Jackets a 3-0 lead. When she was in the field, the native of Washington, Pa. allowed just two hits and a walk, while picking up a pair of strikeouts. She didn’t allow a hit through the first three innings of the seven-inning affair. She was also named PAC Pitcher and Hitter of the Week.
Nick Garber
Wrestling
Garber beat some of the best Division III wrestlers in the country on his way to finishing seventh at this year’s Division III National Wrestling Championships this past weekend in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After losing his opening match, Garber bounced back by beating Paul Marcello of Johns Hopkins 8-7 and picking up a dominating 13-6 upset win over fourth-seeded Sean White of Augsburg. The Waynesburg native then secured seventh place by beating Corey Brown of Thiel 13-6. He also became the school's first wrestling All-American since 2001.
