WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Apr. 23) – The Waynesburg University softball team ended the home portion of their 2009 schedule by splitting a doubleheader with visiting Geneva on Thursday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets remain at .500 on the year (14-14) after the twin-bill, while the Golden Tornadoes are now 23-13.

Waynesburg fell in the opener by the final of 6-1. Geneva got off to a tremendous start by jumping out to a 5-0 lead after two innings of play. Tornado pitcher Ashley Archer had a perfect game finally broken up in the sixth, thanks to a single by Samantha Volponi.

Trailing 6-0, the Jackets ended the shutout bid in the bottom of the seventh when senior pitcher Autumn Minor blasted a solo homerun over the left-center field fence. Minor suffered the loss in the circle after giving up five earned runs on 10 hits. She also struck out five.

In game two, a 3-2 Waynesburg win, starting pitcher Amanda Baughman settled in after giving up a first-inning run to retire 15-straight batters from the first to the sixth inning. The Jacket bats got their starting hurler the offense she needed to grab the victory in the sixth.

Minor tied the game with a one-out RBI single that scored shortstop Kristen Lautenschlager, and Baughman followed with her second in hit of the game. After a wild pitch put Minor and Baughman in scoring position, catcher Kristyn Klueg was intentionally walked to load the bases.

With the bags full, centerfielder Amber Pivik managed to poke a one-out single into centerfielder to give Waynesburg its first lead of the day (2-1). The home team added the eventual game-winning run during the following at-bat on an Elysia Orison single.

Trailing by two, the Tornadoes got a solo homerun off the bat of Adriane Blake in the sixth, but the visitors didn’t get any closer to the victorious Jackets.

Baughman had a tremendous all-around day at the park as she recorded seven strikeouts, while giving up two earned runs on five hits and no walks to improve her pitching record to 6-5 on the season.

The sophomore also led her team at the plate with two hits in three trips to the dish and a run scored.

The Jackets wrap up their regular season on Saturday, Apr. 25, when they head to Kentucky to take on Thomas More for a Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
