Garber named PAC's best on the mat
Junior 141-pounder earns conference award after going 4-0 at Messiah

WEXFORD, Pa. (Nov. 9) – Waynesburg University wrestler Nick Garber picked up right where he left off last season by winning the 141-pound weight class at the Messiah Invitational on Saturday.

 

After going 4-0 at the event, Garber was named the first Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Wrestler of the Week for the 2009-10 season.

 

The Waynesburg native pinned three of the four opponents that he faced, with two of the falls coming in the first period. He finished the day with a 7-5 overtime victory over second-seeded Eric Rhoads of Elizabethtown to take the title.

This is Garber’s fourth PAC Wrestler of the Week Award during his three seasons with the Yellow Jackets. Waynesburg returns to the mat on Friday, Nov. 13, when they host Division II program Shippensburg. The following day, they go to Washington & Jefferson to take part in the W&J Open.

Baughman drilled a three-run double in the third inning of Waynesburg's 4-2 win over Trine to break up a scoreless tie and give the Jackets a 3-0 lead. When she was in the field, the native of Washington, Pa. allowed just two hits and a walk, while picking up a pair of strikeouts. She didn’t allow a hit through the first three innings of the seven-inning affair. She was also named PAC Pitcher and Hitter of the Week.

Garber beat some of the best Division III wrestlers in the country on his way to finishing seventh at this year’s Division III National Wrestling Championships this past weekend in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After losing his opening match, Garber bounced back by beating Paul Marcello of Johns Hopkins 8-7 and picking up a dominating 13-6 upset win over fourth-seeded Sean White of Augsburg. The Waynesburg native then secured seventh place by beating Corey Brown of Thiel 13-6. He also became the school's first wrestling All-American since 2001.
