WAYNESBURG Pa. (Jan. 31) – The Waynesburg wrestling team overwhelmed an under-manned West Virginia Tech team on Saturday and cruised to a 42-9 win over the Golden Bears.
With the victory, the Yellow Jackets improved to 9-3 in dual matches this season, while West Virginia Tech fell to 0-9 overall.
After Rico Borz and Tyler Altmeyer received forfeits at 125 and 133 pounds, sophomore 141-pounder Pat McCabe gutted out a 3-2 win over Justin Ashley to put the Jackets ahead 15-0.
Freshmen Jesse Byerly and Jared Roberts followed with first-period pins at 149 and 157, respectively, to move Waynesburg ahead 27-0. Freshman Alex Evanoff (pictured above) kept the winning going with an 11-6 decision win at 165 pounds, increasing Waynesburg's lead to 30-0.
After Tech earned their first win of the day at 174, Charles Thomas and Corbin Semple picked up forfeits at 184 and 197 pounds to increase the Yellow Jackets' advantage to 42-3.
The Bears picked up a fall at heavyweight to end the day.
Waynesburg won't have much time to enjoy their victory as they must now prepare to face back-to-back matches with opponents ranked in the top 20 of Division II according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA).
On Tuesday, they travel to Shippensburg to take on the 16th-ranked Raiders. Thursday, the Yellow Jackets return home to face the 10th-ranked Lakers of Mercyhurst. Both matches are scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m.
