WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 20) – Since the 2008 football season came to an end, Waynesburg University football standouts DJ DeWitt and Scott Cree have had conference and regional honors heaped upon them.
Now, the duo can boast being recognized as some of the nation’s best as DeWitt was named to the Associated Press (AP) Little All-America team, while Cree was named an All-American kick returner by D3Football.com.
DeWitt, who led the team and the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) with 10.5 sacks, was lauded as a second-team pick by the AP. He was also honored as a D3Football.com first-team All-South Region pick earlier this off-season.
The three-year starter finished the season with 17.5 tackles for loss and 52 total tackles. He was also named First-team All-PAC for the second-straight season at defensive line following his senior campaign. He was an honorable mention pick his sophomore year.
For his career, DeWitt started 38 of the 40 games he appeared in, rolled up 23 sacks and ended his Jacket playing days with 42 tackles for loss. He was the only player from a PAC school to be named to the prestigious AP all-star team.
Cree, who was a third-team selection to the D3Football.com All-American squad, had a breakout season in 2008, both as a returner and as one of the team’s starting cornerbacks.
This past season, the shifty returner took three kickoffs back for touchdowns, and added a pair of punt returns for scores. He also averaged 25.8 yards per kick return, including a 97-yarder for a score that just missed breaking the school record, and 12.4 yards per punt return, with a long of 88 yards. The Waynesburg Central graduate led the PAC in kick and punt return average.
When he wasn’t having one of the best special teams seasons in school history, Cree was causing headaches for opposing quarterbacks by picking off a team-best five interceptions. He added his sixth touchdown of the season, despite never playing offense, when he ran one of those picks back for a score against Westminster.
Cree was joined on the all-star team by Washington & Jefferson quarterback Bobby Swallow, who was an honorable mention pick.
This was the second-straight year that the Jacket program featured one of its own named to the two All-America teams. Last year, senior defensive end Mike Czerwien was listed on both squads.
