Waynesburg freshman Jessica Kody not only picked up third-place honors at number-four singles, she also teamed up with senior teammate Laura Garcica to place third at number-one doubles. Kody's two bronze finishes were among five such placings for the Yellow Jackets.
ERIE, Pa. (Oct. 25) – After getting seven entrants into the third-place matches at the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) championships following the opening day of the tournament on Saturday, the Yellow Jackets came away with five third-place finishes on day two.
After losses in the third-place matches at number-one and number-three singles, Waynesburg picked up its first win on the day at fourth singles where freshman Jessica Kody earned an impressive win by sweeping Chatham's Megan Padula 6-0, 6-0.
Another Jacket youngster, freshman Cassie Califf followed Kody with the team's second impressive third-place finish with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kristina Behne of Thomas More.
A third Waynesburg freshman, Melissa Faulkner, grabbed third-place finish number three with a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 triumph over Washington and Jefferson's Carrie Campbell.
Moving into the doubles ranks, Waynesburg added two more third-place finishes, starting at first doubles. Senior Laura Garcia teamed up with Kody to grind out a 9-8 (5) win over Thomas More's Lauren Race and Monica Pharo.
The Jackets' final triumph of the day came at second doubles where the pair of Allie Horochak and Jess Mally battled Thomas More's Lindsey Burns and Brittany Knapp. After a highly competitive match, Horochak and Mally took the win by the final of 8-6.
The win was sweet for Mally, as she fell to Burns in the third-place match at third singles.
On the day, Waynesburg finished in third place in the final team standings with 19 points, just ahead of Thomas More, who had 14 points. However, the tournament belonged to Grove City and Westminster, who sported representative in every championship match.
In the end, the Wolverines showed once again why they are the dominant women's tennis program in the PAC, as they won eight of the total nine championships to roll to their 23rd-straight team title.
Senior Grove City player Tamara Nations was named PAC Player of the Year, while Westminster head coach Scott Renninger was named PAC Coach of the Year.
